Maybe I just totally missed it, but I guess I don't really see how this is the oft repeated "death of democracy"... Maybe a video would have shown more. But I don't understand how this is the "rise of fascism". Do people really understand what fascism is exactly? I wish the radio guy would have explained more instead of just parroting the same phrases over and over.
I read about the entire meeting (because the sound bite seemed a bit out of context), and it doesn't seem as villainous as it has been made out to be. There was a long-winded speech (from Sheila Jackson Lee, D-TX) about side issues that were tangential to the Patriot Act, which took up all the available time. There was a motion to give the panelists one minute each (from Conyers, D-MI) to respond, but there was an objection (presumably from a republican), which stopped that. Then Sensenbrenner asked for evidence to be provided about librarians who had been badgered by law enforcement and provided a week to do it in. Then he adjourned. The meeting had timed out. Could Sensenbrenner (being the chairman) extended the meeting? I suppose he could have. But he was not obligated to. And why should he when the discussion was not about the stated topic? I think that the meeting lacked the drama that was read into it later.
Do a google search for the news relating to this. Hardly anyone outside of the left-wing blog set is talking about this. That doesn't mean anything in and of itself, but I think that the rise of fascism in the US would be at least a slightly newsworth event.
