I lived in Duluth. I was born there, actually. It is ok. Good points and bad.
Good: beautiful scenery, good university, associated youthful population
Bad: No job market of any kind, even higher population of nursing home escapees, and occasional foul air from cloquet.
If you can find a satisfactory job there and don't mind being near the university to find people your own age, then Duluth is great.
Geographically, if I were to live in MN permanently or semipermanently, I would live there. Very similar in some ways to AK, except there are very very few old people in AK, which is helpful when driving. :) It is just difficult if you don't go to school there.
Far better than brainerd, however.
